CME

What is CME?

Continuing medical education (CME) consists of educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, professional performance and relationships that physicians and other health professionals use to provide services to patients, the public, or the profession.

Is CPD different from CME?

The term continuing professional development (CPD) is being used by some as an alternative to CME. It emphasizes professional development, And covers activities undertaken by a variety of health professionals, which are aimed at a wide range of competencies and attributes. The subject content dealt with would go beyond medical topics.

What is MPC Program?

The overall goal of continuing education of health professionals is the Maintenance of professional competence and professional standards. To Reflect this emphasis, the CME Program of LBMS could be renamed the MPC Program

Why CME/CPD?

The basic purpose of CME/CPD is to improve the performance of the health professional in his or her practice, and thus enhance the care that patients and the community receive.

Who organizes CME/CPD activities?

Institutions and organizations possessing the requisite academic and scientific expertise would function as CME/CPD Providers, after accreditation by LBMS. The Scientific Boards and Scientific Committees of the LBMS, the Health Sciences Faculties and colleges of Libyan Universities, Specialty units in Hospitals and specialization clinic, and professional associations and specialized societies are the main CME/CPD Providers. The Libyan Board of Medical Specialties (LBMS) functions as the authority administering the organization of formal CME/CPD activities in Libya the CME Department manages the routine administration of the program.

How do I benefit from the CME / CPD Program?

The program will facilitate health professionals to keep abreast of the developments in their specialties, and enable them to provide care of high standard to the community. The Health authorities in Libya give recognition to participation in accredited CME/CPD activities when making administrative decisions in selected situations. Furthermore, other institutions and organizations, too, insist that practitioners are registered in the Program for satisfying some of their requirements. Every practitioner has the opportunity to acquire credit points by participating in activities that would help in professional development. He or she would qualify for the receipt of a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of CME/CPD program during a given calendar year

What is the procedure for participation in CME/CPD activities?

Enrolment in CME/CPD activities is open to all concerned.  The prospective participant would select the activity depending on whether the subject matter to be dealt with would help in improvement of practice. Organizers of accredited CME/CPD activities take steps to inform the selected  target group about the events. The CME center, too, furnishes basic information about them via the CME Department web site (www.lbmlibya.org./cme), and the Jamahiriya Medical journal of the Libyan Board of medical Specialties Health professionals who participate in accredited CME/CPD activities would be issued a certificate by the program organizer, which would also indicate the credits gained. Practitioners who complete CME/CPD activities are expected to maintain relevant documentation throughout the five-year cycle. To help in proper documentation, a portfolio or file has to be kept by the practioners.

How do I calculate participation in CME/CPD activities?

All accredited CME/CPD programs would have a credit point value assigned to them. They would fall in either Category 1 or Category 2, based on a number of factors. In general, programs in Category 1 carry credit at the rate of 2 point for every hour of educational activity: those in Category 2 would be worth half that amount. Participation in programs organized by accredited institutions abroad would be considered for recognition by LBMS. The exact quantum of credit to be assigned to such programs would depend on the standing of the institution responsible and the documentation on the activity available to the CME Department Practitioners are advised to contact the organizer and consult the concerned CME Officer appointed by LBMS, for clarification of the CME aspects of activities conducted abroad.

I have already gained more than the required credits, within the first year. Do I need to collect additional points during the current cycle?

It is possible that you reach the total required within 1 or 2 years. You still need to engage in appropriate CME/CPD activities every year during the balance period in the 5-year cycle, and show evidence of it when requested. The goal of the Program is maintenance of professional competence through continuing education—collecting credit points is only an indicator but not its the primary aim of the CME/ CPD program.
